Activity ABB is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries. With a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB has four customer-focused, globally leading businesses: Electrification, Industrial Automation, Motion, and Robotics & Discrete Automation, supported by the ABB Ability™ digital platform. ABB’s Power Grids business will be divested to Hitachi in 2020. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 144,000 employees.

As a pioneer in rail technologies for more than a century, ABB is dedicated to design, manufacture and test products related to power and automation technology for customers from service providers to rail operators, as well as complete solutions of service, maintenance and restoration of infrastructure and rolling stock and consulting.

Activities by year

Activities in 2019: ABB has won orders worth more than $140 million from Swiss train manufacturer, Stadler, to supply state-of-the-art traction equipment for trains and locomotives in the United States and several European countries. Stadler’s Spanish subsidiary in Valencia ordered traction converters and traction transformers for 15 locomotives for operation in various countries, including France, Germany, and Spain. Additionally, traction equipment for new rail vehicles for other European operators in Italy and Slovakia were ordered.

SBB Swiss Federal Railways’ (SBB) signed a new five-year frame contract with ABB for power protection and support. SBB selected RER670 Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) from the globally acclaimed Relion product family for transformer protection and line distance protection. RER670 provides both customized and pre-configured protection solutions and protects transformers and power lines with high sensitivity.

ABB was an important partner in the deployment of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the third largest NRLA construction project after the Lötschberg and Gotthard Base Tunnels, as well as the fifth longest railway tunnel in Switzerland. ABB supplied a wide range of innovative, energy-efficient solutions both for the Ceneri Base Tunnel and the Giruno trains from Stadler, thereby making a major contribution to sustainable mobility in the rail sector.

Innovations in 2019: *ABB inaugurates its Lithium Ion battery factory in Baden (Switzerland), which will contribute to change rail transport by making it more environmentally friendly. * Fully electric EMU: the application of this technology in batteries has allowed an EMU train to travel 80 km, although in optimal conditions it could reach 150km; allowing it to carry out completely sustainable transport, without the need to use fossil fuels and best of all, without investment in catenary. * Hybrid DMUs: ABB is helping to improve the reliability and reduce emissions of diesel rolling stock, thanks to hybridization projects of different electric diesel DMUs.
